Described in the Bible as a woman from whom seven demons were cast out, and later rumored throughout Christian history to have been a prostitute, Mary Magdalene’s story has often been flattened by rumors and misogyny.
In my interpretation, however, she represents transformation, devotion, and the possibility of being seen beyond one’s past. Supported by the love of the one they called The Messiah, she becomes one of the few who remains near him at the crucifixion and the first to witness him after the resurrection. Not too shabby!
Mary Magdalene stands as a reminder that healing is possible, that women are more than their sexuality, and that people are more than the labels placed upon them.
Her story invites us to marvel at the redemptive power of love and the beauty of recognizing the full humanity of another.
